(1) Somnath – Somnath is a magnificent temple located on the coast of Saurashtra in the state of Gujarat. The first of the 12 holy Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva is here in Somnath. Somnath is also mentioned in the Rig Veda. The temple of Somnath has stood in the way of many destructive foreign invaders who have been tempted by the fame of the temple to plunder and convert. The temple has been rebuilt whenever attempts have been made to destroy it. The Somnath Temple has been a symbol of the rise and fall of Hindus in India. The Muslim rulers tried to demolish the temple several times but the Somnath temple has been rebuilt. The temple you are seeing now was renovated between 1947 and 1951 after independence. (2) Mallikarjun– Shri Mallikarjun Swami is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in Shri Shailam, Andhra Pradesh, India. This place is one of the 5 Padal Petra places. According to Hindu mythology, the twelve places where Shivaji manifested himself are worshiped in the form of Jyotirlinga. Shri Mallikarjun from Andhra Pradesh ranks second. Shiva devotees from all over the world come here to pay homage to the magnificent Shivling. Shri Mallikarjun Swami is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in Shri Shailam, Andhra Pradesh, India. This place is one of the 5 Peter’s Place.

(3) Mahakaleshwar– Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. This Jyotirlinga is located in the town of Ujjain in the state of Madhya Pradesh, the main temple of Lord Mahakaleshwar. The temple is beautifully described in the works of great poets like Puranas, Mahabharata and Kalidasa. Being spontaneous, glorious and south-facing, Mahakaleshwar Mahadev has a very virtuous significance. It is believed that Moksha can be attained only by seeing this Jyotirlinga. Mahakavi Kalidasa mentions this temple in his legendary book of poetry Meghdoot while describing the town of Ujjain.



(4) Omkareshwar– Omkareshwar is a temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. This is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. This temple is located on an island in the river Narmada called Mandhat or Shivpuri. It is said that the size of this island is about 4. There are two temples here, Omkareshwar (Lord of Omkar) and Amareshwar (Lord of Immortal Gods). But according to the verse of Dwash Jyotirlinga, Mamaleshwar is Jyotirlinga, which is situated on the other side of the river Narmada.



(5) Baidyanath– Vaidhanath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shivaji in India. It is also known as Vaidhanath Dham. This temple is located in Santhal Pargana of Jharkhand. A branch line runs from the JCD station of the Eastern Railway, on which it is located. There is a lake near the temple and there is an inn. The climate here eradicates leprosy, leprosy etc. So the pilgrims fetch water from afar and carry it to Vaijnath. Hence he is known as Vaidhanath. People also call him Vaijnath.


(6) Bhimshankar– Bhimashankar Temple is a Jyotirlinga located in Khed taluka near Pune, Maharashtra, India. This temple is located in the Sahyadri range, 15 km from Shivaji Nagar, Pune. This place is also the source of the river Bhima, this river goes further and meets the river Krishna near Raichur.


(7) Rameshwar– This Jyotirlinga is located on the shores of the sea in Tamil Nadu. Here Shriram worshiped Lord Shankara. Lord Rama worshiped Shiva in the temple as there was no sin in the war with Ravana. Rameshwar is one of the important pilgrimage sites of Hinduism.

It is said that when Ramachandraji was going to invade Lanka, he worshiped Shivling by making sand from the beach at this place. Stopping at this place, Lord Rama was drinking water, saying, “Do you drink water without worshiping me?” He was pleased and blessed Shriram. The Jyotirlinga has been established here ever since Lord Shiva accepted the prayers of all to reside there in the form of Jyotirlinga for the welfare of the people.
When Lord Shriram was returning after killing Ravana, he made his first stop on the Gandhamadan mountain across the sea. There many Shimunis came to him for darshan. Welcoming them all, Lord Rama said to them, ‘I have felt the sin of Brahmahatya because of the slaying of Ravana of the Pulastya dynasty. You show me the way to get rid of it. ‘

(8) Nageshwar-Nageshwar Temple or Nagnath Temple is a famous Hindu Shiva temple located on the border of Dwarka. He is one of the twelve (12) Jyotirlingas. Nageshwar means Lord of the Nagas and it signifies liberation from poison i.e. liberation from evil tendencies by Shivaji. In the Rudra Samhita, Shiva is referred to as ‘Darukavan Nagesham’. Nageshwar is considered to be the first Jyotirlinga on earth. Other temples that meet this Jyotirlinga 1. Jagteshwar, Almora, Uttarakhand and 2. Aundh is in Maharashtra.


(9) Kashi Vishwanath– Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the most famous temple of Hinduism, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The temple is located on the right bank of the holy river Ganga and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The chief deity here is known as Vishwanath or Vishwaishwara, which means Lord of the World. The city of Varanasi is known as Kashi, hence this temple is known as Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

(10) Trimbakeshwar
-Trumbakeshwar is an ancient Hindu temple located in the city of Trumbak in Nashik district in the state of Maharashtra. Trumbak is located 3 km away from Nashik city. Trumbakeshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shiva.
The Kushavarta Kunda in the temple premises is considered to be the source of the river Godavari. Godavari is the longest river in the southern region. The present temple was built by Peshwa Balaji Rao (Nanasaheb).

The temple is built from a fort fifteen feet high. As soon as you enter from the lion gate in the north, a huge Patangan comes. And in the middle of it is a magnificent black stone temple with a wonderful carving of 30 feet wide, 115 feet long and 5 feet high. This Jyotirlinga is not like the traditional Shivlinga. Inside the sanctum sanctorum is a pit half a foot wide and one and a half feet deep. Which is mostly filled with water from the Gautami river flowing in the foothills of this Jyotirlinga. If the mouth from where the water is secreted is closed by hand, three lingas and a fourth pit like a large lemon a little deeper on the inner wall are clearly visible. Here women are forbidden to worship Jyotirlinga.


(11) Kedarnath– Kedarnath Jyotirlinga or Kedarnath Dham (Kedarnath Temple) is a holy place of Hindus dedicated to Lord Shankar. It is located on the banks of the Mandakini River in the Rudraprayag district in the state of Uttarakhand in the northern part of India in the Garhwal region in the foothills of the Himalayas. The sanctuary is open for viewing throughout the year from Akshay Tritiya to Kartik Sud Purnima due to inclement weather as well as inaccessible geographical conditions. Then, with the onset of winter, the deity is relocated and brought to Ukhimath for worship. As the name of this region is Kedarkhand, Lord Sadashiv is worshiped here as Kedarnath i.e. Nath of Kedar.

(12) Dhrishneshwar-Ghrishneshwar or Ghushmeshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The temple is located 11 km from Daulatabad, a city near Aurangabad in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The temple is located near the world famous Ellora Caves. At one time a devout woman named Kusum used to worship Shivling by speaking in the lake. This was his routine. His husband’s first wife was jealous of his devotion and respect in the society and he killed Kusum’s child. Sad Kusum did not give up her daily routine and when she went to bathe the Shivling in the lake again her son was resurrected. Lord Shiva appeared before him and the villagers and since then Shivling is worshiped there in the form of Ghushmeshwar.
